1962 Topps Roger Maris #1 PSA Mint 9 - None Higher. Roger Maris was a very good baseball player who had a great season in 1961 when he broke Babe Ruth's single season record of 60 home runs. Most fans at the time were either hoping for the Babe's record to remain with the Bambino, or for Mickey Mantle, successor to Joe DiMaggio on the Bombers, to break the record. It was a season long battle. The left-handed swing of Maris was a natural for the short porch right field at Yankee Stadium. Also, the Yankee batting order usually had Maris batting third, and batting clean-up and protecting him was Mantle, a switch-hitter. Maris got plenty of good fastballs all year hitting in front of Mantle, and he made the best of it. The New York press concocted a feud between Mantle and Maris, when in reality they were good friends sharing an apartment in Queens. On the last day of the season, Maris needed a homer to break Ruth's record, and Roger got it, in the 4th inning off Tracy Stallard of the Red Sox. Maris was a good runner and a superior right-fielder with a great arm. He played for four Major League teams, and finished his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He batted .260 lifetime with 275 homers.
The 1962 Topps issue was its largest to date at 598 cards. The cards are basic in design and feature a large posed photo. They do not have team logos and most are vertical. Maris had broken Babe Ruth's single season homer record in 1961 and is given the honor of card #1. There is a "wood grain" border on the front and therefore chipping along edges is easily apparent, and thus cards in high grade are very scarce. Graded PSA Mint 9. One of only six graded MINT with none higher.
