1932 U.S. Caramel Bobby Jones #3 PSA Mint 9. Almost as legendary as the skill which earned him golf's only Grand Slam was the grace and dignity of the man who claimed all four Majors of the 1930 season. Jones famously dismissed accolades for calling a penalty stroke upon himself at a crucial juncture of a match with the statement, "You may as well praise a man for not robbing a bank." For Jones, there was no struggle between right and wrong. Wrong never stood a chance. Golf journalist Herbert Warren Wind put it best when he wrote, "In the opinion of many people, of all the great athletes, Jones came the closest to being what we call a great man."During the Golden Age of Sport in the 1920's, Jones was his sport's most skilled and beloved practitioner, and his retirement from professional golf at age twenty-eight following his 1930 Grand Slam realization is arguably the premier example of an athlete going out on top. The presented trading card finds the links' noblest resident in the earliest years of that retirement, as he was hard at work in creating his greatest enduring legacy, the construction of the Augusta National, home of the Masters.
Like its younger and more common cousin, the 1933 Sport Kings issue, the 1932 U.S. Caramel set was a multi-sport affair, featuring the leading figures of baseball, boxing and golf. Jones is far and away the most important entry from the golfing stars, and joins Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig as the most desirable from the entirety of the thirty-two components of the set.
Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the rarity of this card--one of only three at the Mint 9 level with none higher--is that fewer than sixty representations have been graded by PSA at any level. This issue is, quite simply, one of the most challenging of the pre-war era, with completion a challenge undertaken only by the most intrepid of collectors.
