Description
Period-Signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays Rookie #305 PSA VG+ 3.5 Auto 10. He was rated number two on The Sporting News' list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players of the Twentieth Century," topped only by the iconic Babe Ruth. There are many who would contend that it was Mays deserved top billing--in the end, it comes down to your particular definition of "greatness." That Babe Ruth was the most noteworthy figure in twentieth century baseball is difficult to dispute. And it's true that he was the game's premier pitcher before he became the game's premier slugger. But if baseball's "five tools" is the metric--hitting for average, hitting for power, baserunning, throwing and fielding--Mays' superiority is clear. The Say Hey Kid joins Mickey Mantle as the key rookies of this legendary issue, however the 1951 Bowman is universally considered to be Mays' key card whereas most collectors favor the 1952 Topps for Mantle. And while Mantle struggled during his debut season, Mays was brilliant from the opening bell, ultimately earning the National League Rookie of the Year Award for his efforts in 1951.
Another shared association of this esteemed duo of Big Apple centerfielders is an evolving autograph format--modern collectors will know that Mays' signature would trend further and further toward illegibility over the passing decades, the letter "W" of his first name bearing a strong resemblance to the number "4" by the dawning of the autograph show era. Like the other signed trading cards from this remarkable in-person autograph collection, this card was signed very shortly after production, however the ink has not lost an ounce of its gravitas over the passage of nearly three-quarters of a century, earning every point of its perfect rating.
The card itself is likewise a real beauty, providing bright colors and crisp registration to balance against the common period faults of imperfect centering and corner wear. The vividness off the image and the perfection (and placement) of the autograph make this a stunning showpiece and one of the most desirable Mays cards we've ever had the privilege to present. Graded PSA VG+ 3.5, Auto 10.

Heritage Auctions is honored to introduce to the sports collectibles marketplace one of the finest collections of vintage signed sports cards ever assembled. This remarkable collection was meticulously cultivated by a single passionate visionary over many decades, with nearly every piece bearing a signature that matches the vintage of its medium. At the core of the collection is a breathtaking run of signed cards spanning several years from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s, widely regarded as the golden age of post-war sports cards. It includes complete or near-complete signed sets from many of the most coveted baseball issues of the period, including 1948-55 Bowman and 1952–1955 Topps runs. Also included are 1948 Bowman Basketball and seldom seen autographed football sets, such as 1948-55 Bowman, 1948 Leaf, and 1950s Topps sets. Each set is a masterclass in curation. In addition to iconic stars and Hall of Famers, there are countless cards bearing period signatures that are incredibly tough to find, either due to the short lives of the players or the relative obscurity of their careers. For set collectors and autograph purists alike, this grouping represents an unfathomable opportunity.
The collection's strength lies in its harmony of condition, completeness, and character, which is an homage to the pure intentions of its creator. With impeccable provenance and a once-in-a-generation level of aesthetic quality, this collection is a celebration of the intersection of sport, history and the spirit of collecting, offering pieces that transcend the hobby and enter the realm of legacy.

Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding and you must be on an individual lot page to reflect the accurate time remaining for that particular lot.
