Description

1959 Topps Bob Gibson #514 PSA Mint 9 - Three Higher. One of the fiercest competitors in the game's long history, Bob Gibson once explained "I've played a couple of hundred games of tic-tac-toe with my little daughter and she hasn't beaten me yet. I've always had to win. I've got to win." And win he did. Gibson represents the last of his breed of tough, durable pitchers who didn't rely on a relief pitcher. In his 528 appearances, 255 were complete games. His career total of 251 victories is impressive enough but it is other accomplishments that stand as testimonial to his greatness. In 1968 he was honored with both the NL MVP award and the Cy Young award (by unanimous vote). Cardinal fans saw Gibson go 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA and 13 shutouts! The nine losses were hardly by a lack of effort. A weak Cardinals line-up had just one .300 batter resulting in five 1-0 losses, another loss was a no-hitter pitched by HoFer Gaylord Perry. During June and July he pitched 47 consecutive scoreless innings, appeared in 34 games - 28 were complete games.

Graded PSA Mint 9. One of thirty-one graded MINT with three graded higher. The offered high-numbered rookie card has all of the attributes one would expect. It is not just a Mint example but a benchmark others can be compared to. Near perfect centering, bright white borders, and yes, one, two, three, four sharp corners and a glossy surface highlight this pack-fresh rookie card wonder.
