    Description

1956 Topps Roberto Clemente (Gray Back) #33 PSA Mint 9. Roberto Clemente was a hero to the thousands of Pittsburgh fans as a physical wonder who possessed an enormous amount of natural talent and an obvious passion for the game. He died a hero as well to the people of Nicaragua for his selfless efforts to help the poor and impoverish after a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks that claimed 6,000 lives and left 250,000 homeless. His body is forever lost at sea following the crash of his overloaded earthquake relief plane in the coastal waters of his native Puerto Rico. Already guaranteed baseball immortality through his eighteen brilliant seasons of Major League service and his newly-minted key to the 3,000 Hit Clubhouse, Roberto Clemente achieved the closest thing to baseball sainthood that tragic last day of 1972.

Graded PSA Mint 9. The PSA census shows over 1,200 submissions with a mere half-dozen earning a "Mint" label. Just one is rated higher. Cards and collectibles bearing his likeness are treasured mementos. From the earliest years of his career he offer one of the finest examples of what is his 2nd Topps card from 1956. It is hard to believe this "Gray Stock" variant earns sexagenarian status as it appears as magnificent today as it must have so many summers ago. Colors, gloss, surfaces, corners, even centering is utter perfection. With a card this impressive the stock used truly is irrelevant. If you are a Clemente fan who wants nothing but the best for his/her collection, your search is over.
