Description
1955 Topps Sandy Koufax #123 PSA NM-MT 8. 1955 could have been perfect. The Dodgers were about to win their only Brooklyn World Series championship. Sandy Koufax could throw a ball through the side of a barn, not that there were many barns in his hometown Brooklyn neighborhood. But sometimes Koufax couldn't hit the side of that barn. He was the hardest thrower in the National League, and yet hardly pitched. This rookie card came out. After the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958, things got better for Koufax, but not that much. It was now 1961. His lifetime record was 36-40. In 1960 he was 8-13, had a 3.91 ERA and had walked 100 batters in 175 innings. In an exhibition game, Dodgers' catcher Norm Sherry told Koufax to forget about trying for a strikeout and let the batter hit it. The rest is history. Koufax relaxed and found control. Sandy went 18-13 in '61, then began an amazing five-year streak straight to the Hall of Fame. From 1962 until his retirement after the '66 season, Koufax went 97-27, and won the NL ERA crown each season. He won three Cy Young Awards in those years and an MVP. Koufax pitched four no-hitters in this streak, topping everything with a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs in 1965, the only one ever pitched by a Dodger. The 1955 Topps set is popular, with great eye appeal. Nice headshot of a young Koufax. Topps was still competing with Bowman in 1955. Since many players signed with Bowman, the Topps set was only 206 cards. The horizontal cards feature both a large head shot and a smaller full body shot on the front. A colorful team logo is found in one of the upper corners. A facsimile signature is on the front; a bio and cartoon are on the back. Graded PSA NM-MT 8.
