Description

1955 Topps Roberto Clemente Rookie #164 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. An incredible talent hailing from Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente could do it all. He could hit, as evidenced by his four batting titles and membership in the 3,000 hits club, he could field, winning twelve gold gloves and he was clutch under pressure with a lifetime World Series batting average of .362 in 14 games. On top of being an incredible player, Clemente was also an incredible person, with a legacy that extends far beyond the baseball diamond.

He was a trailblazer for future generations of Latino players and expressed his resentment towards racial intolerance he encountered as a young player with the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the off-season Clemente would do extensive charity work. On December 31,1971, while he was accompanying supplies meant for earthquake victims in Nicaragua, the small, overloaded and understaffed aircraft plunged into the sea. In 1973 Major League Baseball renamed the Commissioner's Award in Clemente's honor and each year it is presented to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship and community involvement.

Offered here is Roberto Clemente's highly coveted rookie card from the 1955 Topps set. Graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. Centering is even. The colors and print registry are outstanding. The surfaces are nice and clean. A great card of a great ballplayer and man. Only three graded at this level with a dozen rated higher out of a total population of over 5,200 or a card ranking in the top one-third of one-percent (.0028%).
