Description

An iconic rookie!

1955 Topps Roberto Clemente #164 PSA NM-MT 8. He gave his Pittsburgh fans the pleasure of witnessing his 3,000th career hit before giving his life in a tragic airplane accident during the subsequent off-season while on a humanitarian aid mission to Nicaragua. Like the noble Lou Gehrig before him, baseball waived the standard five-year waiting period for Hall of Fame enshrinement, honoring the fallen twelve-time Gold Glover along with Monte Irvin, George Kelly and Warren Spahn as members of the 1973 induction class.

It all began here, during the 1955 season that would introduce not only one of the sport's greatest players, but one of its greatest men. Clemente is one of two elite stars to make his debut in this important issue, the first Topps breed to feature a landscape format. You will find his fellow 1955 rookie Hall of Famer, Sandy Koufax, likewise on offer within this Platinum Night event. Both are essential components in any quality post-war baseball trading card assembly.

More than four thousand examples of the martyred Hall of Famer's debut card have been submitted for evaluation by the experts at PSA, but only fifteen unqualified specimens have soared higher than the offered example. Bright colors and sharp registration supply spectacular visual strength, making this a particularly attractive specimen even at this lofty grade.
