1955 Topps Jackie Robinson #50 PSA Mint 9. "It kills me to lose," said Jackie Robinson in a revealing quote. "If I'm a troublemaker, and I don't think my temper makes me one, then it's because I can't stand losing.... all I ever wanted to do was finish first." When one watches either of the two major movies about Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, one gets a sense of his intelligence and humanity, but what neither film fully portrays is his ultra-competitive nature. When he reached the Majors as the first modern African-American Major Leaguer, Robinson had already been a star running back at UCLA and had been in the army as an officer, one who refused to go to the back of a bus on an army base and was court martialed for it.

He had also played in the tough-as-nails Negro American League for the Kansas City Monarchs. In the Majors, pitchers threw at his head and base runners tried to spike him, and in his early career Robinson followed Branch Rickey's request to have "the guts not to fight back." He was the MLB Rookie of the Year in 1947 and the NL MVP in 1949. He hit .311 lifetime and made the Hall of Fame. He helped the Dodgers to six pennants and their 1955 World championship. His electrifying baserunning, or just the threat of it, could take over a game.

The 1955 Topps set was issued when Topps was still in its card war with Bowman. Because many players had exclusive contracts with Bowman, the Topps set was only 206 cards. Topps used a horizontal design and featured its more recent practice of having two photos on front. Here Robinson is depicted in portrait and batting images. He was primarily used at third and left field in his later career, and he's listed at third base. Graded PSA Mint 9. One of twenty-five graded MINT with one rated higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
