Description
1955 Topps Hank Aaron #47 SGC Mint 9 - Only One Higher. The high point of Hank Aaron's career was undoubtedly the April 8, 1974 night at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium when Aaron hit a pitch from Al Downing over the fence in left-center to achieve his 715th homer to pass Babe Ruth. Many baseball fans discount the massive muscles and massive home run totals from baseball's "Steroid ERA", and feel that Hank Aaron remains the true all-time "People's Leader". Hank played ball in the Negro American League for the Indianapolis Clowns, and when he signed with the then Boston Braves, he had to learn to stop batting cross-handed - a habit which restricted his power, and yet ironically helped him develop his famously strong wrists. Aaron reached the Major Leagues when the Braves were in Milwaukee, and hit .280 with 13 homers in '54. Some fans may not know how superior a young Aaron was as an all-around player. He was an outstanding right fielder who won three Gold Gloves. He won the NL MVP in 1957 when the Milwaukee Braves were World champs. He hit .305 lifetime, and holds MLB records for RBI (2,297) and Total Bases (6,856). He finished with 755 homers in his 23-year career. The 1955 Topps set came out when Topps was in a battle with Bowman for baseball card supremacy, and many players were still under contract with Bowman, so the Topps issue was merely 206 cards - larger than standard size at 2-5/8" by 3-3/4". The cards featured an interesting design in which on the front the brightly colored background would fade to a lighter shade as the card went from the portrait shot towards the action image. Difficult to find in high grade. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of six graded MINT with one graded higher.
