    Description

1954 Topps Ted Williams #250 PSA Mint 9. The 1954 Topps Baseball issue was a Ted Williams sandwich, with the superstar slugger appearing on both the first and final cards in the set of 250. Here we encounter one of the finest known examples of the latter, a stellar representation bested just once in over 2,000 PSA submissions.

Collectors are well aware that first and last cards from any set tend to be particularly difficult to find in high grade, as these tended to bear the brunt of environmental impacts during storage. These complications are typically compounded when those cards feature top stars, which were typically handled and traded more than the "commons."

But the Splinter is Splendid here, boasting bright colors, flawless registration, and corners sharp enough to cut a steak. This last card in the 1954 Topps set was very nearly Teddy Ballgame's last playing-days card, period, as the Red Sox hero retired on September 26, 1954 after the season's end. Ultimately, he'd be coaxed back into service with a $98,000 salary, earning "Comeback Player of the Year" honors in 1955.
