    Description

1954 Topps Henry Aaron #128 PSA NM-MT 8. It's certainly one of the hobby's most important post-war cards, a status it will retain even though Aaron's remarkable 755 career home run total was finally surpassed. Though Aaron's own assumption of the home run crown came more than a quarter century after Jackie Robinson broke the color line, Hammerin' Hank was forced to endure everything from racist taunts to death threats as he reeled in the Babe.

Dodgers announcer Vin Scully celebrated the scene when Aaron finally claimed the throne: "What a marvelous moment for baseball, what a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia, what a marvelous moment for the country and the world. A black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol."

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. This gorgeous slab of cardboard finds the young former Negro Leaguer at the start of that long march toward immortality, hatched from wax at a time when the Major Leagues were still settling into integration. Characteristics are what one would expect. Colors are extremely bright, registration is perfect, and the borders teeter upon consistent perfection. Only light corner touch suggest six decades of survival, the other three are all "minty" or mint. Elevating this special representation to the upper reaches is an impressive visual appeal on top of close to top physical condition. This is an exemplar all other "8" companions can be judge upon.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
