    Description

1954 Topps Ernie Banks Rookie #94 PSA NM-MT 8. True baseball fans revere Ernie Banks, "Mr. Cub," who played with extraordinary skill coupled with unconcealed enthusiasm. Banks was one of the last and greatest Negro League players to make the Majors who came to the Friendly Confines directly from the Kansas City Monarchs at the end of the 1953 season.

After playing the last ten Cubs' games of the '53 season he wouldn't miss another game until August 11, 1956 for a streak of 424 consecutive games. He played his entire career with the Cubs, 19 seasons. For nearly the first half of his career, he played shortstop, winning a Gold Glove in 1960. He hit 277 homers as a shortstop, a feat not topped until Cal Ripken, Jr. passed him in 1993. Switched to first base, Banks hit 235 more round trippers, for a career total of 512. A 14-time All-Star, Banks managed to run off another streak of over 700 straight games, ending in 1971. Fellow HoF slugger Ralph Kiner once said, "He would lightly wrap his fingers around the bat. He looked like he was playing the flute." That was music to the ears of Chicago fans.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. What a beautiful example. The colors are deep and inviting. A valuable remembrance of Mr. Cub, of whom writer Maury Allen once said, "The rain might be beating down on top of the Cubs' dugout, and Ernie would say, 'Let's play two. Or sometimes three."
