    Description

    Population one of one!

1954 Topps Al Kaline Rookie #201 PSA Gem Mint 10. After twenty-two seasons in a Tigers uniform, close to thirty as the team's television color commentator, and a front office position he held until his passing less than a year ago, Hall of Fame outfielder Al Kaline came by his "Mr. Tiger" nickname honestly, second only to the iconic Ty Cobb in the team's pantheon. Kaline debuted at age eighteen midway through the 1953 season, making thirty appearances that year, but 1954 is considered the All-Star slugger's official rookie campaign, an auspicious start for which he claimed the bronze medal in American League Rookie of the Year balloting.

This third major release by the Topps company dabbled with a bold design feature that complicated the hunt for perfect specimens, a contention validated by the fact that this is the sole Gem Mint 10 specimen in the PSA (or SGC) population. Note that the top edge of the 1954 Topps issue features full-bleed color, resulting in the amplification of the slightest abrasion (while likewise tricking the uninitiated into believing that the card is miscut). Here, of course, there is not a blemish to be found, nor an imperfect corner or a hint of wax or gum staining. Colors are bold and bright, registration sharp, and a gloss as silky as can be. It's the single finest Kaline card that exists.
