Description1953 Topps Jackie Robinson #1 PSA Mint 9 - Only One Higher! It is almost impossible to illustrate just how substantial and essential were the contributions of Jackie Robinson. That he forever changed the character of our National Pastime for the better is self-evident, but overly simplistic. Even in the (relative to the vast majority of the United States) racially diverse borough of Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson would be for thousands the first black man that they considered "one of us." They cheered for him. They loved him. Some of the boys in the stands at Ebbets would march as men in Selma because their hearts and minds had been opened during warm summer afternoons in Flatbush. In short, Jackie Robinson was baseball's greatest gift to the soul of our nation, and arguably the most significant figure in the history of American sports.
Presented is a tribute to his enduring contribution, the first card of the 1953 Topps series that has become a classic entry in the hobby. Oddly, Bowman did not include him in their 1951, 1952 or 1953 editions. This particular card presents the Dodger great in what has become one of the most recognizable portraits to grace a small piece of card stock.
Graded PSA Mint 9. Over 3,000 submissions has yielded just eight cards worthy of the Mint label with one graded higher. A simply stunning example in all regards. Colors are bold and vibrant. The flawless white frame is tamed only by the four highest quality corners. Even the centering is close to perfect. Surfaces are problem free with a fresh glossy vibrancy. If we can call any card "fresh from a pack" we must do so for this card. One of the finest cards featuring on of the finest gentlemen to step onto a baseball diamond.
