    Description

Fitting Tribute to the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year.

1952 Topps Willie Mays #261 PSA NM-MT 8. Jim Burris of the American Association Service Bureau once wrote, "Blessed with tremendous natural ability, Willie can do almost everything just a little better than the next fellow." He was talking about 19-year old Willie Mays. The first minor league baseball diamond Mays played on was with Class B Trenton affiliate in 1950 before his ascension to the AAA Millers in 1951. There he joined future Hall of Famers Hoyt Wilhelm and Ray Dandridge, but Mays quickly earned a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, batting .477 in thirty-five games and dazzling spectators with his range and arm in the outfield. By late May, he was a Big Leaguer. From his debut season, his talents impressed, as he would earn the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year Award and participate in one of baseball's most famous games (Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard Around the World contest). Along with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays' rookie deserves credit for this set's ranking within the top ten lists of collectors' most favored issues. His cards are a key entry from that golden age of bubble gum cards.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Submissions of this classic card currently stands at more than 2,500. Fifty-nine are graded NM-MT with only 11 rated higher. That puts our offered card within the top one-half of one-perfect of all PSA submissions. Troublesome print defects, gum and wax staining - so often a problem with issues of this era - are entirely absent here. The inks have retained a vibrancy almost seven decades later. Any 1950's collection is not complete without this card which hopefully seems to be in the starting stage of greater appreciation of astute hobbyists.
