    Description

1952 Topps Willie Mays #261 PSA NM-MT 8. Jim Burris of the American Association Service Bureau once wrote, "Blessed with tremendous natural ability, Willie can do almost everything just a little better than the next fellow." He was talking about 19-year old Willie Mays. The first minor league baseball diamond Mays played on was with Class B Trenton affiliate in 1950 before his ascension to the AAA Millers in 1951. There he joined future Hall of Famers Hoyt Wilhelm and Ray Dandridge, but Mays quickly earned a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, batting .477 in thirty-five games and dazzling spectators with his range and arm in the outfield. By late May, he was a Big Leaguer. From his debut season, his talents impressed, as he would earn the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year Award and participate in one of baseball's most famous games (Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard Around the World contest). Along with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays' rookie deserves credit for this set's ranking within the top ten lists of collectors' most favored issues. His cards are a key entry from that golden age of bubble gum cards.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Currently one of fifty-nine graded NM-MT from PSA with ten rated higher. Troublesome print defects, gum and wax staining - so often a problem with issues of this era - are absent here. Centering rests about as precisely as one could hope for. In recent years this card has come into its own and finally getting the recognition it deserves.
