The Say Hey Kid makes his Topps debut!

1952 Topps Willie Mays #261 PSA NM+ 7.5. Jim Burris of the American Association Service Bureau once wrote, "Blessed with tremendous natural ability, Willie can do almost everything just a little better than the next fellow." He was talking about nineteen-year old Willie Mays. The first minor league baseball diamond Mays played on was with Class B Trenton affiliate in 1950 before his ascension to the AAA Millers in 1951. There he joined future Hall of Famers Hoyt Wilhelm and Ray Dandridge, but Mays quickly earned a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, batting .477 in thirty-five games and dazzling spectators with his range and arm in the outfield. By late May, he was a Big Leaguer.

As a pro, "The Say Hey Kid" would earn his immortality in the black and orange of the New York and San Francisco Giants. From his debut season his talents impressed, as he would earn the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year Award and participate in one of baseball's most famous games (Bobby Thomson's Called Shot contest), going on to meet fellow rookie Mickey Mantle in the 1951 Fall Classic. Along with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays' rookie deserves credit for this set's ranking within the top ten lists of collectors' most favored issues. His cards are a key entry from that golden age of bubble gum.

Though Mays and Mantle find themselves on opposite sides of the third-series dividing line that made the latter one of the hobby's most famous rarities, the numbers for both Hall of Fame center fielders thin out considerably at this lofty rung of the PSA population ladder. Great colors, gloss and centering lead the upward surge. Graded PSA NM+ 7.5.
