    Description

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 SGC 84 NM 7. It's the hottest card in the hobby right now, soaring to new heights with every auction cycle, and there's every reason to believe that the trend will continue for some time. Many trading card experts have gone so far as to suggest that the 1952 Topps Mantle has supplanted the T206 Wagner as the hobby's most celebrated representative, and while relative populations indicate that the Mick will never quite match pricing for the Old Dutchman, there is some logic to the contention.

The Wagner, for all its undeniable glory, is essentially a production aberration, a victim (or beneficiary) of chance, as are the Plank and Magie of the same issue. But the 1952 Topps Mantle, while also buoyed by its "short print" status, signals a tectonic shift in the hobby itself, a new paradigm in both the trading card collecting hobby and in the sport's pantheon. After Topps, and after Mantle, the baseball landscape would never be quite the same again.

So when one takes a larger view of history, the rising tide of the card that launched Topps' first high-number series seems almost preordained. Certainly the examples residing on the upper rungs of the population ladder are seeing the most significant pricing growth, and the presented example clearly deserves its lofty rating. Centering is so close to perfect as one could hope, with a tightly registered and beautifully colored central image. An enticing target for the wide-eyed nostalgist and the cool-headed investor alike.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
