Description
The king of the post-war hobby!
1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 SGC 84 NM 7. Fourteen years after Mickey Cochrane was nearly killed at Yankee Stadium by a fastball to the skull, quite possibly in retribution for the home run blast in his previous at-bat that would prove to be the last base hit of his career, the son of an Oklahoma miner who was named for the superstar catcher took his first Major League steps on that same hallowed ground. Though that switch-hitting youngster would soar to an even higher level of the sport's pantheon than his namesake, Mantle's early struggles nearly rendered this 311th card of Topps' first great baseball issue nothing but a high-number "common," worth perhaps $300 in Near Mint condition. But Mickey's father "Mutt" Mantle cured his disheartened son of the urge to quit baseball with a reminder of the hard mining life that awaited him back home in Oklahoma, fatherly wisdom that would ultimately transform the offered slab of cardboard into the most important entry in the entirety of the post-war catalog.
Many collectors credit Heritage Auctions as a major force in the surging market for the fabled 1952 Topps Mantle, our global reach bringing new money into the game and fattening the latter portion of the supply/demand dynamic. And as the geopolitical world enters a period of increasing uncertainty, investors seeking the safety of a market planted in those basic forces, impervious to the unpredictable whims of the Fed or foreign elections, can only grow. All signs point to an enduring bull market.
Those who subscribe to that belief are well-advised to throw a leg over and grab the horns firmly. The bidders who saw the writing on the wall four years ago have seen their investment quadruple or better. While past is not always prologue, the rise has been consistent going back perhaps two decades, though certainly at a markedly sharper incline in recent years.
