Description

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 SGC 80 EX/NM 6 - A Fresh to The Hobby Find. Most of the 1952 Topps single cards and small groups offered in this auction have come from one source--a dusty, unassuming cigar box left forgotten and unmolested for over a half century. What will not be forgotten very easily is the contents. Almost 100 Topps baseball cards from 1952, most originating from the highly coveted high number run that closed the first and some say finest baseball production Topps has ever created. Most of the big names were there including Campanella, Reese and Durocher plus stellar examples of Wynn, McDougald, Dark and making his first appearance after his famous home run, Bobby Thomson. When hearing of this find, of course our first question was "Is there a Mantle?" And the answer was "Yes!"

Without a doubt, this is the most important and sought after of all post-war cards. This coveted example of card #311 from the first comprehensive Topps issue has been graded SGC 80 EX/NM 6. Only vertical centering and the most minuscule amounts of wear at the corner tips to suggest anything other than cardboard perfection. Seemingly unhandled for close to sixty years the rich and vibrant hues, flawless gloss and precise print registration are first rate. Yes, you will see a higher graded example and they will be impressive for sure. Will they have those undefinable special qualities, that "X Factor," to match this beauty? Will it command your attention and make you pause for an immensely satisfying and nostalgic moment needed if only to catch your breath? We would doubt that. A treasure to behold and a pleasure to have the opportunity to offer.
