    Description

    A high-numbers hero...

1952 Topps Jackie Robinson #312 PSA NM-MT 8. While it's no groundbreaking statement to express that prejudice is most fundamentally rooted in ignorance, it's important that we clarify that term. The enormous strides made in American racial equality in the past seven decades are not due to the white majority becoming more intelligent, but rather more familiar with our fellow citizens of African descent. Human nature instructs us to fear, to condemn, that which we do not understand, and the racial divisions in this nation had, since colonial times, been absolute.

We offer this prelude in order to illustrate just how substantial and essential were the contributions of Jackie Robinson. That he forever changed the character of our National Pastime for the better is self-evident, but overly simplistic. Even in the (relative to the vast majority of the United States) racially diverse borough of Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson would be for thousands the first black man that they considered "one of us." They cheered for him. They loved him. Some of the boys in the stands at Ebbets would march as men in Selma because their hearts and minds had been opened during warm summer afternoons in Flatbush. In short, Jackie Robinson was baseball's greatest gift to the soul of our nation, and arguably the most significant figure in the history of American sports.

Presented is a fitting tribute to his enduring contribution, the first card of Jackie Robinson to bear the Topps brand. Oddly, Bowman did not include him in their 1951 or 1952 editions. This particular card also presents with a quiet strength worthy of the Dodger great. This is one of forty-three assessed at the NM-MT level with just twelve graded higher. Centering is close to perfect. Surface is nearly blemish-free. Colors are bold and vibrant. Corners are crisp with nearly no wear at the tips. An absolutely stunning card.
