1952 Topps Eddie Mathews #407 SGC 84 NM 7. This single piece seems to hit all the marks that define a baseball card "classic." It's the rookie card of a future Hall of Famer and - sluggers are everyone's favorites! - 500 HR Club member. Its number "407" identifies the entry as a '52 Topps "High Number"; these were printed in small quantities to begin with, and the relatively few surviving examples from this year's series have outlived the majority of their contemporaries. (It's been documented that numerous cases of '52 Topps "High's" were dumped into the ocean as excess, unusable product, and thus awoke from their packaging to be greeted - not by schoolyard chatter - but by watery destruction.) Finally, Ed Mathews' debut collectible is especially condition-sensitive by virtue of its size and, if that wasn't liability enough, it's the last card in a numerical arrangement of a set-builder's holdings. All of this constitutes a recipe for desirability, indeed, and it's also a formula for an extremely important collectible that just happens to be extraordinarily hard to obtain in the higher grade levels!Just six copies have been confirmed at the SGC 84 NM 7 level with four placing higher, each a mere half-grade higher in NM+. This stunner exhibits astonishingly bright photo quality with shimmering surface gloss. Each of the four corners tips display so little wear, magnification is needed to realize it is there. The bright white frame, and only slightly off-centered graphics are reported strictly for thoroughness. Mainly because it's so difficult to find fault in the presentation of this surprising well-preserved specimen!
