1952 Topps Ed Mathews #407 PSA NM-MT 8. Perhaps no single trading card of the post-war era has faced a tougher journey toward an eventual home in a high-grade slab as the humble Eddie Mathews rookie, a relic that bedevils even the most advanced collectors of Sy Berger's landmark creation. The early struggles of the Topps company are well documented--pallets of wax boxes simply gathered dust in the warehouse until the obsolete stock was ultimately dumped from a barge to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Examples of Mickey Mantle's in NM-MT 8 condition now sell for over half a million dollars at auction. Thirty-three currently exist in that grade. But this is one of only fourteen 1952 Mathews cards assessed at that elite level, making this card well over twice as rare as that of his fellow 500 Home Run Club member. There are two distinct reasons for this large population discrepancy. First, and likely most relevant, is the fact that Mantle was double-printed on production sheets, but Mathews appeared only once. Secondly, as the last card in the set, Mathews was commonly victimized by rubber bands used by original collectors who stored their cards in numerical order.

Somehow the offered example managed to navigate the minefield of its birth and six and a half decades of existence. It is one of only a handful to appear before you by Heritage graded NM-MT 8. Rich hues and sharp corners provide outstanding aesthetics, and the surfaces remain clear of any gum or wax staining. Our last offering at this grade hammered for $60,000 (w/BP), and there's every chance that this example will keep the needle moving upwards.
