    Description

1952 Topps Ed Mathews #407 PSA NM-MT 8! This single piece seems to hit all the marks that define a baseball card "classic." It's the rookie card of a future Hall of Famer and 500 Home Run Club member. Its number "407" identifies the entry as a '52 Topps "High Number," assuring the same brand of rarity that makes the Mickey Mantle entry the hobby's most coveted post-war card. It's been documented that numerous cases of '52 Topps "High's" were dumped into the ocean as excess, unusable product, and thus found a destiny not of schoolyard chatter, but rather watery destruction.

Finally, Ed Mathews' debut collectible is especially condition-sensitive by virtue of its status as the last card in a numerical arrangement of a set-builder's holdings. It is, quite simply, one of the most endangered rookies of the post-war era.

Just over a dozen equivalent copies have been confirmed at the PSA NM-MT 8 level by PSA, and a mere three (or, one-half of one percent of the card's population) place higher. This stunner exhibits astonishingly bright photo quality with shimmering surface gloss, and four of the highest quality tips grace each of its corners. An almost undetectable leftward tilt affects the positioning of the image field within its bright white frame, and off-centered graphics on the reverse. Both of these details are reported strictly for thoroughness in description. The intense rarity and immense importance render such quibbles rather absurd.
