Description
1951 Bowman Whitey Ford #1 SGC Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. Displayed is the rookie card of Edwin "Whitey" Ford." Yankee manager Casey Stengel said, "If you had one game to win and your life depended on it, you'd pick [Ford]." And Ford did take a lot of those big games. He won 236, and lost only 106, the lefty having a winning percentage of .690, the highest ever of any MLB pitcher who has won over 200 games. A native New Yorker, Ford came up to the Yankees and went 9-1 in his first season, and he was the Rookie of the Year runner-up. Bowman expected big things from Ford in 1951, because the company gave him card #1, but Ford spent two years in the army. Ford later became the Yankee's ace pitcher, and in '61, while Mantle and Maris together bashed 115 homers in chasing Babe Ruth, Ford compiled a 25-4 record to win the Cy Young Award. Ford threw 33.2 consecutive scoreless World Series innings to break Babe Ruth's record of 29.2. Whitey was a part of six World Series winning Yankee teams, and pitched in 11 World Series, going 10-8. After he retired, Ford later admitted throwing a scuffed ball and a mud ball. Whitey was good friends with Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin, and all three these running mates made the HOF, Martin as a manager. Post career, Ford was a coach. This 1951 set was 324 cards, Bowman's largest. Meanwhile, Topps made a limited foray into the baseball card world. Each 2-1/16" by 3-1/8" Bowman card had painted art enhancing a B&W photo. Since Ford's card was #1, collectors often kept it on the outside of many cards that were in order, sometimes with a rubber band around it, and as usual with first and last cards of a set, it is rare in high grade because of added wear. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of only three graded MINT by SGC with none higher.
