1951 Bowman Ted Williams #165 PSA Mint 9 - None Higher. Ted Williams was larger than life - and chose as his ambition to "Walk down the street and have folks say, 'There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived.'" Williams grew up poor in San Diego, California. His mother was Mexican-American, a fact Williams obscured for many years because he was aware of the prejudice it could engender. Williams turned pro in 1936 with his hometown Pacific Coast League San Diego Padres, and three years later was a rookie with the Boston Red Sox, and "Teddy Ballgame" hit .327 and led the league with 145 RBI, still the highest MLB total for a rookie. Williams was a sensation each season, and in 1941 he hit .406, the last time it has been done in MLB. The United States entered World War II, and in '42 Williams won the Triple Crown. He then joined the Navy and became a Navy (later a Marine) pilot. "The Splendid Splinter" resumed his baseball career, but was recalled for two years combat duty in the Korean War as a Marine pilot. Later, he continued to play with the Red Sox through the 1960 season, homering at Fenway Park in his last-at-bat in baseball.

When he gave his acceptance speech at his Hall of Fame Induction, Williams gave an impassioned speech urging inclusion of more of the great Negro League stars to the Hall of Fame. It's not definitive if Williams has achieved his ambition to be the greatest hitter who ever lived, but he is always in the conversation. His '51 Bowman card features a beautiful rendering and obviously skilled composition. Graded PSA Mint 9. Less than 1% of the over 2,500 cards reviewed by PSA have graded MINT and there are no others graded higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
