Description
1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie #253 SGC Good 2. In the early 1950s, Mickey Mantle, the upstart slugger from Commerce, Oklahoma, turned out to be just what the New York Yankees needed. A perennial contender for the AL pennant, the Bronx Bombers were in search of someone to replace the aging Joe DiMaggio in center field. In 1951, they brought the 19-year-old wunderkind up to the Majors to play alongside the soon-to-be retiring icon. Playing in 96 games, "The Mick" launched 13 homers and drove in 65 runs. Of most importance, however, was the fact that the Yanks made it back to their third straight World Series and won, four games to two, over their New York City rivals, the Giants. Though Mickey suffered a serious injury to his right knee in Game 2 of the World Series, the impression he made in that short span was enough to keep him in the good graces of the legions of Yankee fans clamoring to get a good look at the new kid on the block.Presented is Mantle's official rookie card from the 1951 Bowman set. Though it doesn't seem to generate the same fanfare as his first Topps card (1952 #311), the '51 Bowman is his undisputed rookie card and remains on the want lists of serious baseball collectors all over the world. In his first three seasons in pinstripes, Mickey helped the team capture three consecutive World Series. The offered example, which features a classic image of Mickey demonstrating his batting pose during Spring Training, is a keeper. This specimen of card #253 from the '51 Bowman series is found in Good condition with rich colors, good registration and a clean back, but does show some centering issues. Graded SGC Good 2.
