1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie #253 PSA NM-MT 8. "Willie, Mickey and the Duke," sang Terry Cashman in his poignant anthem "Talking Baseball," a song immortalizing these center fielders. Whether a collector is old enough to remember or young enough to wish he could, we can't relive baseball's 1950s. But possessing Mickey Mantle's true rookie card can help to emotionally transport one back to those golden days. When Mantle was with the Yankees in spring training in 1951, he wasn't expected to make the team. He was only 19-years-old, but manager Casey Stengel took Mickey for the Yanks. In July, Mantle was sent to the Yanks' Triple-A Kansas City team for five weeks, then recalled.

In the '51 World Series, Mickey was in right field, and in trying to avoid center fielder DiMaggio on a fly ball, severely injured his knee after tripping on a drain. In 1961, Mantle and Roger Maris were both pursuing Babe Ruth's single season 60-homer record. The whole country followed the chase, but late in the season, Mickey developed an infection, had to miss games, and finished the season with 54 homers. Mantle won the '56 Triple Crown, had three MVPs, and was a 20-time All-Star, and a 7-time World Series champ. Mantle was baseball's best-ever switch-hitter, hitting 536 homers.

The 1951 Bowman Mantle is the official Mantle rookie card. The 1952 Topps Mantle gets acclaim because it is the first Topps Mantle card. Late in the '51 season, Bowman added the #253 Mantle card to its last series of the issue, and cards from this series are scarcer than ones issued earlier. The colorized photo depicts a young Mantle. A close look reveals he is wearing #6, his number for the first half of the 1951 season. Graded PSA NM-MT 8.
