Description

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 SGC 86 NM+ 7.5. Argue all you'd like that the 1952 Topps card is Mickey's true rookie--any calendar tells you that Mantle's Bowman appearance in 1951 came first. We'll also take issue with anybody who claims the Topps rookie is a prettier card, as we're of the opinion that Bowman's designs of the early 1950's represent one of the high water marks in cardboard aesthetics. This is particularly true with this stunning example. The chance to say "flawlessly registered image" is a treat not afforded to every offered copy. The nineteen-year old legend in the making, who stands at batting attention before a cloud-dappled sky on this high-grade high-number virtually jumps off the surface. Graded SGC 86 NM+ 7.5, this copy deserve better in our opinion. The shadowing caused by a printing press roller barely detracts from the intense colors, close to precise centering and a quartet of surrounding high quality corners. A strong example for the grade and more importantly, a visually impressive sight of one of the hobby's key cards.
