    Description

    Only ten superior!

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 PSA NM-MT 8. Argue all you'd like that the 1952 Topps card is Mickey's true rookie - our calendar tells us that the '51 Bowman was actually the first. We'll also take issue with anybody who claims the Topps rookie is a prettier card, as we're of the opinion that Bowman's designs of the early 1950's represent one of the high water marks in cardboard aesthetics. It surely shows on the brightly colored image of the nineteen-year old legend in the making, who stands at batting attention before a cloud-dappled sky on this high-grade rarity.

Educated collectors will understand the difficulty in achieving a NM-MT assessment on any 1951 Bowman, particularly those from the high-number series, which is led off by the Mick. Gum and wax stains plague the issue, and the total graded population of the set is less than half that of the 1952 Topps breed that serves as its primary competition.

Top-tier Mantle cardboard has been enjoying an enduring value surge for the past twenty years, with a distinct spike in the past twenty-four months. Our $2.9M sale of his '52 Topps card at Mint 9 last year should provide some insight into the limitless potential for the investment-minded hobbyist.

    Signature®: Heritage Live!┬« Floor Sessions
Auctions designated as "Heritage Live" have continuous bidding from the time the auction is posted on our site through the live event. When normal Internet bidding ends ten minutes before the floor session for each lot, you can visit HA.com/Live and continue to place Live Proxy bids. Your secret maximum bids placed prior to the live event will compete against the live bids. When the item hits the auction block, you can continue to bid live through HA.com/Live against the floor and other live bidders with streaming audio and video of the auction. You also have the option to bid live by phone. Call (800) 872-6467 Ext. 1150 and ask for phone bidding assistance at least 24 hours prior to the live auction.

Signature® Sessions With Extended Bidding These sessions are presented only online and bidding is only taken through our website. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30.
Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding.
