1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 PSA EX 5. Presented is the official Mickey Mantle rookie card, although the 1952 Topps Mantle gets more attention. Mantle wasn't supposed to start the '51 season with the New York Yankees, but once Casey Stengel got a full look at Mickey in 1951 spring training, the "Ole Professor" wouldn't let him go, and Mantle began the season in right field. Someone named DiMaggio was already in center, playing his final season. Mantle was struggling by July, and the Yankees set him down to their Kansas City farm club. Mantle returned in late August, and in the World Series that year, against the Giants, Willie Mays hit a fly to right-center, and Mantle and DiMaggio went for the ball, and in trying to avoid DiMaggio, Mantle tripped over an exposed drain and severely injured his right knee - an injury that would plague him his whole career. But what a career. A marvelous 1956 season when he won the Triple Crown, and the AL MVP, by hitting .353 with 52 homers and 132 RBI. That magical 1960 season when he was neck-and-neck with Roger Maris in pursuit of Ruth's 60 homer record until an infection side-lined Mantle late in September. Overall, Mantle had three AL MVPs, and was a 7-time World Series champion.
Bowman was the king of baseball cards from 1948, when they were the sole national manufacturer of them, but in 1951 Bowman had competition as Topps entered the card wars. To compete, Bowman produced an iconic '51 set and included Mantle and Mays as cards in the scarcer last 72-card series of the 324-card set. Mantle is given a less common horizontal look. Great eye appeal thanks to strong color quality, the face and verso are clean with no blemishes of staining. Graded PSA EX 5.
