Description
1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Highest Graded Known. Initially offered at auction in June of 2005, this same card touted as "The Black Wagner" sold for a staggering amount of just under $70,000. Few additional examples have surfaced since and none finer. The word "toleteros" in Spanish translates as sluggers. Fitting that the key card in this Puerto Rican issue features perhaps the greatest slugger the game has ever known. Josh Gibson was credited with as many as 84 home runs in a single season and his Hall of Fame plaque says he hit almost 800 four-baggers in his 17-year career. Of the combined 18 Gibson cards submitted to either SGC or PSA, this is the lone example to receive a NM/MT 8 designation with none graded higher. Given the lack of a collecting culture and the humidity constantly present in the islands, it is amazing that such a fine example exists. With four perfect corners, brilliant coloring, clear registration and an ultra-white back; this is an opportunity to acquire an unparalleled collectible of a true baseball legend.Auction Info
