Description

One of only four known autographed examples!

Signed 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson Rookie #79, PSA Authentic, PSA/DNA Auto 8. Sandwiched between this heroic pioneer's Rookie of the Year season of 1947 and his Most Valuable Player season of 1949, the 1948 Leaf issue was the first in years to feature colored ink after wartime restrictions that had ground the trading card market to a virtual halt were lifted, allowing an exciting new era to burst into bloom. Leaf's debut baseball set was a masterpiece of design that left hobby historians lamenting the fact that there was no great second act, but, like J.D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher in the Rye," the 1948 Leaf issue is revered as effectively a brilliant only child.

Along with such fellow titans of the game as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, this number 78 Robinson card has always been celebrated as one of the key entries of the issue--in fact, no other subject from the ninety-eight comprising the set has more appearances in a PSA slab (nearly 1,700 at the time of this writing). But the population shrinks to a quartet when considering only those cards blessed by the autograph of the brave Brooklynite.

In fact, of nearly 30,000 cards from the 1948 Leaf Baseball issue appearing in the PSA population from all subjects, fewer than 200 are signed, bringing the elite rarity of this early treasure into even sharper focus. The card itself demonstrates the typical hallmarks of septuagenarian specimens, with corner rounding and other signs of handling and storage wear, but the image is perfectly centered and brightly hued, with some of the sharpest registration we've seen from an issue that is famous for the opposite.

Finally, and most importantly, the blue ink signature is bold and beautiful, graded conservatively at Auto 8 by the experts. It's certainly one of the finest autographed trading cards that Heritage has presented to the collecting community, providing every requisite hallmark of significance and rarity. Encapsulated PSA Authentic with a certified and graded PSA/DNA Auto 8.
