Description

Period-Signed 1953 Topps Satchel Paige #220 PSA Good 2, PSA/DNA Auto 8 - From The Golden Age Collection. Hall of Fame righthander Satchel Paige was a pitcher renowned for his legendary career in both the Negro Leagues as well as Major League Baseball. Known for his pinpoint control, crafty charisma and ageless dominance, Paige was already a baseball icon before making his MLB debut in 1948, at the age of 42 year young! Pitching for the Cleveland Indians, he went 6-1 in seven starts that first season with 43 strikeouts. He would eventually move in to the St. Louis Browns where he competed for three seasons (1'951 to 53).

Offered is a 1953 Topps card featuring a handsome illustration of Satchel during his time in St. Louis. This represents Paige's only Topps issue ever and therefore is one of the most celebrated cards in the entire postwar hobby. His long-overdue recognition culminated with his Hall of Fame induction in 1971 as one of the first players honored for significant contributions in the Negro Leagues. This example is found in Good condition with an incredible bonus: Paige's prized signature on the front. He signed the card in very distinct blue ink and positioned his autograph just to the right of his face. Graded PSA Good 2 with a PSA/DNA Auto 8.
