1948 Leaf Satchel Paige #8 SGC 84 NM 7. Racial injustice is the reason that one of the greatest arms of his era had to wait until his early forties to earn a rookie card, but the big smile on Paige's face suggests he's ready to let bygones be bygones. The brightly-colored artifact carries particular appeal for Clevelanders, as it commemorates the last taste of World Championship glory for an Indians franchise that nearly ended the sixty-eight-year drought last October. In short, this is a trading card bursting with historical relevance.

But the sociological and Championship context of the card is only half the story. This is a representation that distinguishes itself just as impressively as Paige and the '48 Tribe, as one of only six to survive nearly seven decades of existence at an SGC NM level, with a lone copy rating higher. Print registration, so often problematic in the Leaf species, is precisely rendered here, with strong centering and the nostalgic touch of light age-toning.

While other Leaf short-prints may exist in smaller populations, none carry the importance and collecting appeal of this figure. This is a card that would appear to be primed for the manner of pricing explosion we've seen in recent months for other contemporary rookies, few of which could match the Leaf Paige for rarity.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
