Description

1948 Leaf Satchel Paige #8 SGC 84 NM 7 - Pop Four, One Higher. This is one of the finest examples of one of the most sought after baseball HoFer rookie cards of the post-war era and the finest copy Heritage has had the privilege to offer its bidders! This infamously scarce relic was originally purchased for just a penny. At the time, Satchel Paige had 20 years of baseball experience under his belt, a victim of racial prejudice. At the tender age of forty-two Leroy Paige became the elder statesmen of all rookies in baseball history. Considering that he did not have a Bowman card, it wasn't until Leaf's two-year issue where one could find Paige's only "true" rookie. Certainly the toughest debut card of the era and what a representative it is.

Graded SGC 84 NM 7, from a total population of only forty-six, this card is one of only four to survive at the NM level with a lone copy grading higher. While other Leaf short-prints have lower total populations, none come close to desirability and truth be told, this card is submitted regardless of the condition. A strong and attractive example with a quartet of NM or NM-MT corners, his classic portrait is well-centered with precise print registration which is often comical. Some mild toning give it a timeless nostalgic appeal. Satchel cracks a smile above the caption of his rarely spoken given name, as if he's aware just how tough this short-print beauty is and how lucky you must feel to have just added it to your collection.
