Description
1948 Leaf Honus Wagner #70 PSA Gem MT 10 - Pop One! Not a single story regarding the history of baseball cards has held more fascination than why Honus Wagner did not want to be included in a beautifully designed set of cards show casing over 500 other players of the day. His card has been called the "Mona Lisa of Baseball Cards" and has become the grist of countless articles, multiple books and even mentioned in film. Some felt it was simply a matter of compensation but that has been disproved. It is a fact Wagner chewed tobacco and smoked cigars. There are brands with his name and likeness. Cigarettes though were viewed as a lowly habit and in 1909 it was still legal to sell to minors in some areas, thus the moral stance against cigarettes. It is the continued fascination and background stories that makes this card so ironic. By 1948, the lore of Wagner and his views on tobacco was well known. What fun it must have been seeing the Pirates coach holding a pouch of snuff with a healthy wad about to find home between his cheek and gums. Seven decades later, any discussion about the T206 Wagner vs. tobacco usually ends with a "...but have you seen his Leaf card?" becoming a part of the great history of collecting baseball cards.Acquiring Gem Mint cards from series is close to impossible. The SGC census shows not a single example. From the over 23,000+ PSA census, there are just three graded Gem Mint! The percentage they represent is infinitely small. Mr. Wagner is in rarified company with Frank Gustine and fellow HoFer Warren Spahn.
Graded PSA Gem MT 10. This is the only card in Gem Mint. It is as close to absolutely flawless of a card as one could hope for. We would like to note Heritage auctioned the lone Gem Mint Warren Spahn rookie for $192,000 in April 2018.
