    Description

1948 Bowman Stan Musial #36 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. In years past, fathers could anticipate a routine question from their young sons: "Dad, who's the best baseball player?" The answers varied a bit depending on regional loyalties, naturally, but the replies during the 1950s and 1960s tended to follow a certain pattern. Joe DiMaggio. Mickey Mantle. Ted Williams. All of these were "safe" answers that precipitated very little debate. If the boy persisted, though, and pressed for the best "National League player," only one man lived up to the word "best," and his name was Stan Musial.

Until Willie Mays arrived, and the Giants slugger's talents came fully into bloom, Musial was the N.L. standard against which other ballplayers were measured. The MVP awards, the batting titles, and the remarkable longevity with just one franchise ensured plenty of loyalty for Musial from the fans. One can only speculate about the level to which his star would have risen if "Stan the Man" had played in what, today, we call a "large market" team.

A Stan Musial rookie card of the highest caliber is mandatory for inclusion in a worthy Hall of Fame collection. Problem is, the porous cardstock and lax quality control endured by the initial effort of Bowman - whose '48 set harbors Stan's debut-year collectible - has made acquisition of such a prize particularly difficult. The praiseworthy example seen here, however, is one of only three copies at its SGC tier (one higher) among a total census of 200 specimens. This item's eye appeal is second to none, with a beautifully developed and sharply printed image and perfectly clean surfaces. The integrity of its corners is above challenge, and the reverse is solidly inked.
