    Description

1948/49 Leaf Satchel Paige SP #8 SGC 84 NM 7. This is one of the finest examples of one of the most sought after baseball HoFer rookie cards of the post-war era and the finest copy Heritage has had the privilege to offer it's bidders! This infamously scarce relic was originally purchased for just a penny which would prove to be an investment on par with buying IBM or Apple stock when first offered. At the time, Satchel Paige had 20 years of baseball experience under his belt, a victim of racial prejudice. At the tender age of forty-two Leroy Paige became the elder statesmen of all rookies in baseball history. Considering that he did not make a Bowman card until the second of Leaf's two seasons of issue, one could rightfully consider this Paige's only "true" rookie. Certainly the toughest debut card of the era and what a representative it is.

Graded SGC 84 NM 7, from a total population of only forty-one, this card is one of only three to survive at the NM level with a lone copy grading higher. While other Leaf short-prints have lower total populations, none come close to desirability and the fact that this card is submitted regardless of the condition. A solid and attractive example with a quartet of NM corners, well-centered and gently toned, the print registration (often comical) is close to precise. Satchel cracks a smile above the caption of his rarely spoken given name, as if he's aware just how tough this short-print beauty is and how lucky you must feel to have just added it to your collection.
