1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo Martin Dihigo "Rookie" #65 PSA Good 2. Graded Good 2 by PSA, of the seven total examples submitted to that service this is the highest graded copy recorded to date. Martin Dihigo was quite possibly the finest all-around player of his or any generation ever to step onto a baseball diamond. First baseman, Third baseman, outfielder and even pitcher, Dihigo excelled at every position and to this day is recognized by his peers for his immense talent. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Mexico, Cuba and as of 2006, the ultimate baseball shrine in Cooperstown. The very thin paper stock Caramelo Deportivo or "Sporting Caramels" were circulated in Cuba in 1945-46 and is one of the most significant foreign baseball sets ever produced. The set was almost entirely overlooked until top talent from the Negro Leagues were inducted into the HoF. This was one of the few sets to have featured Negro League athletes, as they were limited to playing in Latin-America, Mexico or Cuba. As baseball fans, we should all be thankful we have these fragile collectibles to honor them. Dihigo only appears in three series, all from the mid-1940's and this is his "rookie" card appearance. The offered example is mostly clean with easily seen paper loss on the obverse but no loss on the reverse which is extremely rare for the issue. It seems this beauty never made it into the special album designed to house the entire series. Without this condition flaw which affects the overall eye appeal very little this would be a solid NM card as centering and corner quality are what one expects to see on a card at that level. A significant addition to any Hall of Fame Rookies or Negro Leaguers specialty collections.
