1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo Martin Dihigo #65 SGC 30 Good 2. To date, 28 total examples submitted to that service there are only two recorded higher. Martin Dihigo was quite possibly the finest all-around player of his or any generation ever to step onto a baseball diamond. First baseman, Third baseman, outfielder and even pitcher, Dihigo excelled at every position and to this day is recognized by his peers for his immense talent. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Mexico, Cuba and as of 2006, the ultimate baseball shrine in Cooperstown. The very thin paper stock Caramelo Deportivo or "Sporting Caramels" were circulated in Cuba in 1945-46 and are among the most significant foreign baseball sets ever produced. The set was almost entirely overlooked until top talent from the Negro Leagues were inducted into the HoF. This was one of the few sets to have featured Negro League athletes, as they were limited to playing in Latin-America, Mexico or Cuba. As baseball fans, we should all be thankful we have these fragile collectibles to honor them. Dihigo only appears in three series, all from the mid-1940's and this is his "rookie" card appearance. The offered example is a superb example for the issue. The fragile paper stock does exhibit very light wrinkling/creasing and there is no paper loss on the front or back which is extremely rare for this series. This beauty never made it into the special album designed to house the entire series. The overall eye appeal suggests a solid EX to EX/MT card for the respectable centering and elevated corner quality. A significant addition to any Hall of Fame Rookies or Negro Leaguers specialty collections.
