Description
1941 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio #71 PSA NM-MT 8 - Only Six Higher! His nickname was "Joltin' Joe" and his illustrious career was one for the record books. He was the longtime center fielder for the New York Yankees (1936 to '51) who led the Bronx Bombers to nine World Series titles. He married starlet Marilyn Monroe in 1954 and even received recognition (and a memorable mention) in a 1968 Simon and Garfunkel song titled "Mrs. Robinson." The unforgettable line from the song asks: "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?"DiMaggio didn't understand the meaning of the line until a chance meeting with Paul Simon himself. "I happened to be in a restaurant and there he was," recalls Simon. "I gathered up my nerve to go over and introduce myself and say, 'Hi, I'm the guy that wrote "Mrs. Robinson," ' and he said 'Yeah, sit down . . . why'd you say that? I'm here, everyone knows I'm here.' I said, 'I don't mean it that way - I mean, where are these great heroes now?' He was flattered once he understood that it was meant to be flattering."
On the baseball diamond, DiMaggio shined. He was a career .325 hitter who belted 361 home runs. But his most memorable feat took a couple of months to accomplish. From May 15 to July 16, 1941, DiMaggio strung together a 56-game hitting streak that still stands today as the longest in MLB history. Beyond the nine championships rings, "The Yankee Clipper" won several accolades including 13 All-Star nods, three AL MVP awards (1939, '41 and '47) and two AL batting titles. His rightful induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame took place in 1955.
Offered is a 1941 Play Ball card featuring "The Yankee Clipper." Capturing the prolific hitter delivering a mighty swing at the plate, this high-grade example of card #71 is found exhibiting robust colors, superb centering, outstanding registration, four sharp corners and a clean reverse. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Of the more than 1,000 examples found in the PSA Pop Report, this is one of 31 cards graded NEAR MINT-MINT with just six rated higher.
