1940 Play Ball Joe Jackson #225 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. "Say it ain't so, Joe," is the probably apocryphal comment made to Shoeless Joe" Jackson by a young fan as Jackson was leaving the Cook County Courthouse where the Black Sox were put on trial for fixing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Whether Joe Jackson took part in the plot to throw the 1919 Series is another matter. There is evidence on both sides. Was Jackson present at meetings with the other seven defendants? There is mixed testimony on this. Jackson did manage a Series-leading 12 hits, but most of those hits came in games that were not fixed. He made no errors, but there were an inordinate number of triples hit to his left field area. In any case, Jackson was a tremendous ball player. He got his nickname when he was playing in a mill league game in South Carolina, and his new spiked shoes were blistering his feet. He took off his shoes to play in his socks, was called Shoeless Joe, and the name stuck. In his first full Major League season, Jackson hit .408 for Cleveland. In his last Major League season, he hit .382 for the White Sox. Shoeless Joe hit .356 lifetime, the third highest mark ever.

The 1940 Play Ball set is unique in that is features 240 cards of both contemporary players as well as long retired stars, such as Jackson, Nap Lajoie, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, etc. This card is scarce in high numbers because it is part of the issue's second series. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Less than twenty have graded NM-MT with none rating higher.
