1940 Play Ball Joe Jackson #225 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. 1940 Play Ball Joe Jackson #225 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. With 1939 celebrated as the centennial of American Baseball and the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame there was nostalgia in the air as youngsters were being introduced to greats of the past. Trading cards would be the perfect medium for this. Gum, Inc. was the brand of the day. Under the "Play Ball" brand, their 1939 promotion was the largest card set since the Goudey set of 1933. For 1940, the completely design-free format of '39 saw the addition of a caption with player names and flanked by a glove, bat and catcher's mask graphics. The 240-card effort also saw the inclusion of Old Timers and it was a brilliant move.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. One of fifteen in NM-MT with none rated higher.
The lengthy list of all-time great included without judgment a card of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson who had not played in the Major Leagues for 20 years for all too well documented reason. Oddly, the bio on the card's back makes no mention whatsoever of the Black Sox Scandal, and simply notes that Jackson's career ended in 1920. Offered is a high grade specimen that rates as one of the highest examples in a PSA holder.
