    Description

1940 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio #1 PSA NM-MT 8. With its appealing and colorful, "Deco"-style motif, this early card of Joe DiMaggio hails from the first of Gum, Inc.'s three "Play Ball" series to feature the addition of color to its portrayals. The '41 format enabled a new dimension in Joltin' Joe's '41 depiction, wherein the exertion seen in the slugger's face as he takes a mighty swing is nicely balanced by the soothing effect of the illustration's background tones. Its artistic merits, alone, would be sufficient to guarantee a prominent place for this card in any thoughtfully assembled collection, but its subject -- the batting leader and perennial All-Star for the high-profile Yankees -- certainly commands plenty of attention in his own right.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Among a total census of well over 300 examples encapsulated by PSA, only eight have equaled this exceptional gem with two judged finer. Having totally avoided the age-toning to which the Play Ball issues were routinely susceptible, the image of DiMaggio on the obverse is set inside bright and clean borders of consistent size. The reverse is similarly fresh in character. The piece's overall appearance betrays no meaningful evidence of past circulation.
