Description
Signed 1933 Goudey Jimmie Foxx #154 PSA VG 3, PSA/DNA Auto 9 - Pop Two, Two Higher - From the Southside Bobby Collection. From the Southside Bobby Collection. Jimmie Foxx was one of Major League Baseball's greatest home run hitters in history. Nicknamed both "Double X" and "The Beast," Foxx packed tremendous power in his swing and launched 534 round-trippers during his illustrious, 20-year MLB career. Initially a pivotal member of the Philadelphia Athletics, where he won back-to-back AL MVP Awards in 1932 and '33, Foxx was dealt to the Boston Red Sox in 1936 and picked up right where he left off. Just two years later, he earned his third AL MVP Award after leading the majors with a .349 batting average and driving in a league-leading 175 runs. For good measure that season, Foxx belted 50 home runs. His career continued for another six seasons during which time he played for the Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, and his impressive numbers grew accordingly. When he finally decided to hang up his cleats following the 1945 season, Foxx trailed only the great Bambino himself, Babe Ruth, in home runs and had 1,922 runs batted in to his credit. Bill Dickey, the longtime catcher for the New York Yankees, once said of Foxx: "If I were catching blindfolded, I'd always know when it was [Jimmie] Foxx who connected. He hit the ball harder than anyone else." In 1951, Foxx was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame alongside fellow home run basher Mel Ott.
Offered is a 1933 Goudey card that features Foxx doing what he did best: swing a bat. It is the second of two cards from the set on which he appears and has remained one of his most recognized and admired cards. A lower-grade example, it still possesses strong colors and a reverse that looks like it could have been printed yesterday. But what sets this particular example of card #154 from the historic '33 Goudey series apart from all the rest is the perfect signature that graces its front. Writing in outstanding cursive, Foxx signed his name in diagonal fashion with a black felt-tip pen. This is a remarkably preserved autograph specimen from the first-ballot Hall of Fame first baseman who died in 1967 at the age of 59. Graded PSA VG 3 with an autograph certified and graded PSA/DNA Auto 9. This is one of only two autographed cards graded VERY GOOD in the PSA Pop Report with just two rated higher.
More Information: The Southside Bobby Collection
Heritage Auctions is proud to present the second phase of The Southside Bobby Collection. The treasure trove of some 3,000 signed items includes trading cards, photos, and even Hall of Fame Plaque postcards that a young boy known as "Southside Bobby" and his father started collecting in the late 1950s. Growing up in Whiting, Indiana, just a half hour outside of Chicago, Bobby and his dad routinely visited the Windy City for nearly 10 years to take in Cubs, White Sox and Bears games. Their outings became autograph hunts, and their efforts were remarkable.
The assortment boasts signatures from Hall of Famers including Hank Aaron, Jim Brown, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Johnny Unitas, Ted Williams and many more. Since they are all period signatures, many are in ballpoint pen, which is often the preferred instrument by autograph collectors. Bobby's chases utilized any means possible including staking out hotels where visiting teams stayed as well as entrances and exits at Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park and even the Bears training camp at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. Miraculously, thanks to Bobby's thoughtful mom, the incredible collection remained intact over the past 50-plus years.
But now it is time for Bobby to share it with fellow collectors. Stay tuned as more autographs from The Southside Bobby Collection will be coming up for bid over the coming months.
