    Description

1939 Play Ball Ted Williams #92 PSA NM-MT 8. A master stroke in the fine art of understatement is found in the back-text of this marvelous Ted Williams rookie card, wherein the writers for Gum, Inc. cited the opinion of "experts" in noting that the youthful Boston prospect "has a great future." Although, granted, Williams hadn't yet enjoyed the opportunity to impress baseball fans on the game's grandest stage, it was apparent that the young player was poised to make history, and that he would become a credible rival for the sport's prevailing gold standard, Joe DiMaggio. The Sox legend is shown in an intimidating batting stride and, while the crisply detailed photographic likeness allows the viewer to experience what he contributed to the game.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Arguably there is no more important vintage in the entirety of a century and a half of professional baseball history, a year that saw the debut of Williams, the tearful farewell of Gehrig, and the ribbon-cutting of the Hall of Fame. But the better part of eight decades that have elapsed since the 1939 season has not laid a glove upon this nearly pristine relic.
