Description

1938 Goudey Joe DiMaggio #274 SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop One, None Higher!

UPDATE: Typo in lot title has been corrected.

It's one of the hobby's true oddities, from the strange numbering system that begins in the 200's, to the abridged cast of just twenty-four players (each appearing in two design formats), to the broken promise on the verso's text stating, "This is one of a series of 312 Baseball Stars." The cartoonish design is unquestionably irreverent, but collectors of this challenging issue consider the pursuit a serious business, particularly those uncompromising hobbyists trafficking only in pack-fresh cardboard.

The issue is heavy with Hall of Fame immortals--Medwick, Gehringer, Foxx and Greenberg among them--but DiMaggio is far and away the set's key figure, with this enhanced design format the more desirable and valuable of the two variations. One is particularly struck by the prediction at the lower right corner that, after just two full seasons in pinstripes, DiMaggio would earn Hall of Fame immortality, even as the fabled museum was still under construction.

This gorgeous specimen stands alone at the top of the SGC pop, and thus the most desirable entry from the breed available within an SGC slab. The market has been white-hot for pop-one-of-one condition rarities for Hall of Fame icons, so we expect a lot of interest in this singularly glorious representation.
