1938 Goudey Joe DiMaggio #274 PSA NM-MT 8 - Only Three Higher. Joe DiMaggio set the bar so high he carved out a path of excellence that only Ted Williams would later follow. His baseball life started on the West Coast in the Pacific Coast League when he became a stand-out for the San Francisco Seals. Amazingly, DiMaggio belted a 61-game hitting streak; surpassing even his ML record of 56 straight games with a hit during that magical season of 1941. The Yankee Clipper bat .357 on 193 hits and 125 RBIs. Today, some batters strikeout 13 times in a span of a week or two. In 1941, Joe DiMaggio struck out only 13 times all season! He meant so much more to society than just a ball player. He was a national treasure who gave society a consistency at a time of great uncertainty in the world. Continuing his charmed life after baseball, one of the most popular sports figures married one of Hollywood's most famous figures - Marilyn Monroe! Though the marriage of Joe and Marilyn was troubled and very short, it remains to this day the ultimate celebrity pairing, the consummate sports legend and the definitive Hollywood star. It is well known that despite a lifelong affection for Miss Monroe that saw DiMaggio send flowers to Marilyn's grave until his own passing.Graded PSA NM-MT 8. This card is one of twenty-eight NM/MT examples noted on the PSA census with three grading higher. The comical image of the young Yankee Clipper ranks among the finest examples in the hobby. We will start off with noting the sharp corners and crisp edges; Coloring is bright and vibrant; Surfaces show a gentle overall and pleasing tone. These can be scarce commodities for the '38 series which were created without a top layer of wax that retains the vivid colors and gloss we come to expect in other sets of the Goudey Brand. A simply remarkable entry with the finest of eye appeal.
